Insight Interview: Affectwave

Since 2019, Affectwave has been producing some of the finest in Hardwave and Future Garage music. Having self-released an incredible discography, we’re excited to share with you this fantastic Insight Interview with the Russian Producer!

Please tell us about yourself in a few words (who you are, where you’re from, what you do etc.)

My name is Andrey. I’m from Russia. I live in the city of Anapa. I write music in wave and future garage styles.

What’s the origin of your artist name ‘Affectwave‘?

I came up with my nickname spontaneously and it does not belong to the wave genre as many people think. In my early works, I tried to make a viscous sound to fit the word affect. I wanted to convey with music a slightly different perception of the world. No drugs. I mean something else that is difficult to describe in words.

How long have you been writing/producing electronic music?

I have been making music for about 7 years. For 5 years I have been making music frivolously until I found my own genre. I write music in such styles as wave and future garage.

What is your current approach to starting a new track?

In the beginning I try to catch the mood of the future track. I listen to myself and start from this. I usually start with the drum part. Next comes the melody and vocals. It also happens that I start with vocals. I do not have an exact scheme of work. I can just scroll through the library of samples for hours and I might like something that will inspire me

Tell us a little about your current studio setup.

Everything is modest with me. Notebook, headphones and midi keyboard This is enough for me for now, although I understand that it is worth thinking about something more serious

Do you have a favorite piece of studio gear?

Yes, I have my favorite midi keyboard novation launchkey 25 mk2. This is my love!

Who are your major musical influences?

Sasha Kim influenced me quite strongly. I didn’t even know about such a genre as wave I heard him for the first time when we met him. I really liked how he makes his music and I wanted to try to write something similar. Since then, I have been doing mainly only this genre.

How has your music evolved since you first began writing/producing music?

Oooo I tried so many genres. I wrote dubstep, trap, bass house, trance, house. I can’t list all of them haha From each genre, I found something useful for myself and apply it in the current genre. It was a very rewarding experience for me, even though I didn’t take music seriously at the time.

Do you have a particular single or album you’re most proud about?

Yes, I am very proud of our joint track with KimWake Me Up“. From solo works I can single out “Iner” and “Fler

Any particular artists you’d like to work with?

Shxpe, Osias, Ktrek, almogfx, Heimanu, Sublab. There are a lot of good artists in this genre now. I just can’t list everyone with whom I would like to work ahah

What’s on the horizon for you musically?

I am planning to release a mini album in the fall. There will be a lot of work with Kim in the future. We want to release a joint album with Kim

Any advice for those looking to start producing future garage or hardwave? Is there a particular setup or process that may help those artists?

I advise you not to rush to upload your music. You need to hone your skills. There are a lot of videos on YouTube that will help. The main thing is to be patient and work every day.

What are three singles you would recommend we definitely check out?

Kim – Contact

Antent – Without You

Tydo – Course Deviation
