Insight Music: 6 Years In

Tuesday 29th August // We’re a few days late to our own birthday party, but we made it.

Insight Music grew from an idea to a dream the moment I started engaging with some of the most emotional and heartfelt music I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. I was 20 years old and about a week away from starting university when I created a Soundcloud channel, originally called Insight Music Promotions, way back in August 2011. My future was unclear, I was heading away from home for the first time in my life to spend the next 3 years with people I’d never met, but Insight soon became my love.

The music, the community, the emotion, it became an addiction. Headphone music was my thing back then and still is, the connection I feel when listening to music through headphones is very much surreal. Everything I learnt at university went straight into the label. I tried to implement all aspects of production, marketing, promotion into this incredibly small but extremely passionate independent label. Mistakes were made, battles were lost, but we live on.

6 years in and I feel we’re in a good place. I like what Insight has become and even more the community evolving around us, fans and artists alike creating, sharing and supporting music from those around them, the way music needs to be heard. I’ve come to realise it’s not all about the views or stats, but about supporting the music we admire. The balance between working life and Insight is a hard one, but it’s one I cherish. Music plays a huge part in my life and has become a healing process which I’ve introduced into all aspects of my life.

The artists I’ve discovered over these years have seriously changed my perspective on the music industry in general. There’s more to music than what we hear on radio or TV, there’s music below the surface that has a much more deeper emotional connection. I still tear up when I hear certain string arrangements on film scores, that extremely powerful moment when music and visual connect so intimately. The music I’ve surrounded myself with is very much like that feeling, it encompasses my life and everything involving it. Euphoric.

Our plans for the future? One word, ‘Saorsa‘, the title of our biggest album release yet to arrive on Insight Music.

No matter how many years go by, I will always be grateful for the continued support our friends, family and supporters show towards Insight Music. It’s you guys that are keeping the dream alive, and I’m eternally grateful for that.
