Designed to recenter listeners on their origin, Lorenz Weber shepherds us with his newest 10-track album ‘earth beats’.
Playing out of Leipzig, German pianist and composer Lorenz Weber has long been one of my stand-by artists when it comes to piano music. Often his pieces are defined by slow ostinatos that draw you in, and ‘earth beats’ is a lovely example of Weber’s thematic brilliance.
“Earth Beats is an plea to preserve the Earth and its natural resources, born out of the urgency of the present situation.”
“This album was recorded during a residency at the Arvo Pärt Centre in Estonia. To capture the unique atmosphere of this room, the wood and the sound of this piano, the tracks are left organic and natural, unmastered as they were recorded.”

Album Review
I won’t spend much time going into detail on the individual tracks for one ultimate reason: I believe it would be an error to lose the message by getting lost inside too many words.
What I love about this album is the simplicity. I may be reading too far into it, but I connect the simple beauty of the tracks with the simple beauty of nature. Each chord, note, and reverberation is executed with purposeful care. I can almost see Lorenz crouched over his piano pouring his soul into every move of his hands across the keys, willing each track to communicate one important plea. This plea being that while the advancements humanity makes are good, we cannot let them distract us from our oldest and simplest duty of taking care of Earth.
“We are completely immersed in furthering our learning in Science, Mathematics and Technology which are all beneficial.”… “Certainly, there is now a better future ahead of us because of modernization, however, we must not forget to look back at where all of these things began−to nature; which plays a significant role in keeping everything in this world intact and interconnected. Without it, we wouldn’t be experiencing our existence today.”
“The track titles can be read as a poem. 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8, 9 make one verse each. … that the end is open.”
Began-to nature, pulsing the current
Ahead, intact
A wounded bird will fly
The earth beats, everything remains one
Remember it
…
Regardless of how beautiful this album is, what I will always find more beautiful is an artist using their gift to bring to your attention that which they are most passionate about. Indeed, each piece in this album is some of the most elegant work you will find, but the theme is what makes it shine the most. I encourage you to listen through the entire work as I have already done many times.
