Radical Reecer – Whimsical : Crestfallen [Progressive Synthwave Meets Ambient Funk]

A warm and nostalgic fusion of progressive synthwave, ambient funk and experimental electronica, where loss, memory and new beginnings take shape through sound.

Across nine tracks, the album moves between nostalgia and experimentation, drawing on the familiar language of retro video game music while developing a sound that feels distinctly personal.

Radical Reecer describes Whimsical : Crestfallen as the next step in a wider process of healing and self-actualisation, with the album exploring everything from nostalgia and loss to empowerment and the possibility of engineering a better beginning. Throughout this review, we take a closer look at the production behind the record, the instruments and techniques used to create its distinctive textures, and how those musical choices connect with the deeper themes running through the album.

“The philosophy for my music is to show my authentic self while fully utilizing my skills and knowledge, to hand-craft everything without AI to show my love for the craft, and to push boundaries in my own lane.” – Radical Reecer

About the Artist

Radical Reecer is a composer and producer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, working across progressive synthwave, ambient funk and experimental electronic music. Producing since 2012, his approach has developed from a long-standing fascination with electronic sound design, organic instrumentation and the expressive possibilities of home production.

His earliest musical influences came through his stepfather’s love of funk and disco, particularly through live bass playing. That eventually led him towards electronic dance music and artists such as Daft Punk, whose own relationship with funk became an important influence. Alongside this, a childhood spent playing video games introduced another lasting source of inspiration. Soundtracks from Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario World left a lasting impression, later joined by more recent influences such as Undertale and Stardew Valley.

These early experiences helped shape his fascination with synthesiser-based music, while artists such as HOME and Aphex Twin further influenced his approach to progressive synth sound design. His musical education continued through drum lessons, piano and eventually a Music Technology degree, before he taught himself guitar after graduating. All three instruments now form part of his production process.

Despite finding professional audio engineering work difficult to come by after university, Radical Reecer continued producing music independently. Earlier projects including the Pastel Tea Demo EP and Sunkissed Demo LP became important steps towards developing his confidence as a producer, while the more recent Stalwart : Flourish and Pastel Tea : Sunkissed releases marked a more deliberate commitment to his work under the Radical Reecer name.

“The album Whimsical : Crestfallen is the next step in a journey of healing, self-actualization, and new beginnings. To paint the picture of the album’s themes, I incorporated more organic, relaxed drum grooves and warbly, experimental synthesizer sound design in addition to modulated funk and shoegaze guitar.”

Album Review

Listening through the album while looking through photographs of Radical Reecer’s home studio, I’m immediately reminded of my own earlier days as a music producer, experimenting with unusual electronic sounds through an ever-growing collection of synthesisers, pedals and effects. There’s something familiar about that process of discovery, but Radical Reecer has developed it into something considerably more refined.

Across the nine tracks, progressive synthwave, chiptune, ambient funk and experimental electronica come together to create a nostalgic world that feels somewhere between a forgotten video game soundtrack and a deeply personal electronic record.

What stands out to me is the album’s lo-fi warmth. There’s a slightly worn, warbling quality to the synthesisers and processed instrumentation that gives the record an almost analogue character, while the playful melodies and electronic textures recall the soundtracks of the early-to-mid 1990s.

At times I found myself thinking back to the wonderfully imaginative worlds of Nintendo 64-era games (I was obsessed with The Legend of Zelda), where relatively simple melodic ideas could create surprisingly emotional environments. Yet this album never feels like an exercise in nostalgia alone, and carries a more developed understanding of sound design and production.

Much of that comes from his decision to combine electronic processing with real instruments and live performance. Yamaha DTX drums, guitar, keyboards and analogue synthesisers become the foundation for an album that feels carefully produced without losing the imperfections that make human performance interesting.

His PRS SE guitar and Marshall DSL40 amplifier bring a physical quality to the record, while the Dreadbox Nymphes and Yamaha MOX8 provide much of its electronic character. The pedalboard becomes another instrument in itself, with effects from Old Blood Noise Endeavors, Beetronics, Walrus Audio, Fairfield Circuitry, Death By Audio and Empress Effects contributing to the album’s shifting textures.

There’s also a real sense of experimentation in the way these sounds are brought together. Lo-fi distorted guitar can sit comfortably alongside playful synthesiser melodies, while funk-inspired keyboard riffs provide movement beneath expansive, heavily reverberated pads. Rather than allowing the electronic elements to dominate completely, the artist leaves space for the character of the instruments themselves to remain audible. The result is dense without feeling entirely synthetic, giving the album a balance between programmed precision and organic movement.

When asked about his favourite track from the release, Radical Reecer points towards the title track, “Whimsical : Crestfallen”, featuring Jesse Bloodgood. The track represents his first official collaboration and his first release to feature vocals, adding another layer of human expression to an otherwise instrumental project.

“I’m truly proud of each track on the album, but the title track “Whimsical : Crestfallen (feat. Jesse Bloodgood)” is a big one, being my first official collaboration and track with featured vocals. Jesse Bloodgood was a joy to work with, and his vocals and lyricism added so much extra depth to the entire project.”

The introduction of multiple vocal layers could have presented a considerable challenge within such a densely produced record, but the collaboration becomes an important part of its emotional identity. Jesse’s vocals bring something more direct and human to the album, while Radical Reecer’s layered production gives them enough space to sit naturally within the surrounding textures. It’s a great single to highlight from the above, and comes with an official video you can watch here.
