A genre-spanning collection that breathes new life into decades-old demos, weaving ambient textures with global instrumentation.
Staring out at the golden leaves carpeting the hillside, there’s a quiet sense of reflection that mirrors what this release offers. “The Midnight Epic Sessions: Reworked & Reimagined, Vol. 1” by Simon Jacobsohn is a deeply meditative reawakening of musical ideas that span over two decades. Originally conceived in demo form, the 14-track album has now been reimagined using modern tools and techniques, blending ambient, world music and electronic influences into a contemplative journey.
The album also serves as a window into Simon’s experimental alter ego, The Mechanical Mind, an outlet through which he explores broader territories, including instrumental pieces and genre-defying works with lyrics. That ethos of experimentation and cross-pollination is a constant presence throughout this expansive body of work.
“I’m inspired by everything: my feelings, love, pain, family and friends … even the ugly state of politics and current events.” – Simon Jacobsohn
About the Artist
Simon Jacobsohn is an independent electronic musician based in the US. A self-taught pianist since the age of five, Simon’s journey through sound has always straddled the emotional and the technical.
Inspired by composers like Danny Elfman and shaped by a love for jazz, classical, and film music, he’s spent a lifetime blending emotive expression with evolving technology. From high school demo tapes to deeply cinematic compositions, his music channels personal and political experiences alike, always with the intention of making listeners feel something at their core.
His work as The Mechanical Mind represents an extension of this artistic philosophy. It’s a project that embraces songs with lyrics, heavy genre experimentation, and visual storytelling, showcasing a more vocal and boundary-less facet of his creativity.

Album Review
The album opens with “Black Moon – Extended Reconstruction” and “A Path Less Travelled – Original Reborn Rendition” which immediately set the tone with lush, layered arrangements. There’s tranquillity in the soundscape, with strings, percussive accents, and ambient pads that drift effortlessly. It feels both ancient and futuristic, almost timeless in its tone.
Jacobsohn’s commitment to world music textures and field-inspired soundscapes is evident throughout. Tracks are built from a mix of traditional instrumentation and modern synthesisers. He uses legacy gear like the Korg Triton Pro and Yamaha CS1-X alongside newer tools such as the ROLI Piano M Blocks and Airwave, all tied together in Logic Pro. The result? A blend of analogue soul and digital precision.

“A Path Less Travelled – Chant of the Dunes Mix” is one of the most transportive moments on the album. With interweaving male and female vocals set against sandy percussive rhythms, it paints a vivid mental image. There’s a deep visual character to the track that feels cinematic. It’s no surprise this piece holds a special place for Simon.
“I love World Music, exploring boundaries and the “Chant of the Dunes Mix” of A Path Less Travelled is one of those tracks that takes you out of your element.”
Genre exploration becomes more playful and layered as the album progresses. “Black Moon – Jazz Mix” stands out with its bold infusion of saxophone and swing-style rhythms, bringing a surprising jazz presence into the ambient mix. It becomes more like a conversation between cultures and artistic styles, anchored by the mediative style of world music.
“Black Moon – Chillwave Synth Remix” certainly grabbed my attention. Warmer, almost sci-fi like synth textures and downtempo beats add a futuristic vibe, yet the connection to the album’s traditional roots remains in tact. “A Path Less Travelled – Celestial Drift Mix” leans further into the ethereal, using spacious atmospherics to craft a more cosmic-inspired single. Both tracks show how reinterpretation can add new emotional layers without losing the original essence of the composition.
Closing the album is the truly expansive “A Path Less Travelled – Orchestral Mix.” It’s a powerful finale that feels more like a film score than a standalone track. With sweeping strings, dynamic progression, and emotional intensity, it ties together the album’s themes of rebirth, evolution, and incredible storytelling.
